Following on from my last post looking at how Fear can affect acceptance of change, today I am going to focus on:
2) Lack of Competence
This is a fear that for obvious reasons people will seldom admit to! But what do I mean by lack of competence? Well sometimes a change of behavior requires a change in skills or learning a completely different way of doing things. Some people may feel that they lack those necessary skills or that they won’t be able to learn them in order to make the transition very well and therefore will block any attempt to move to a new way of doing things. Just as in overcoming fear, good communication will help reduce this cause of resistance, but also be prepared to spend time training people on the ‘new’ way of doing things and remember that people learn at very different rates so while some people my ‘get’ what you are asking them to do straight away with others it may take a lot of coaching and mentoring before they finally understand and accept the change.
