The Challenge

Stagecoach Group is a leading international public transport group, with extensive operations in the UK, United States and Canada. The company employs around 35,000 people, and operates bus, coach, rail, and tram services.

In the UK, Stagecoach is one of the biggest bus and coach operators. Around 2.5 million passengers travel on Stagecoach’s buses every day on a network stretching from busy cities in the South-East of England to the remote Islands of Scotland.

Stagecoach Group’s sustainability strategy is targeting an overall reduction of 3% in annual fleet transport CO2 emissions. The company, which has already received the prestigious Carbon Trust Standard, is investing $15 million to improve the performance of its bus and rail operations in the UK and North America.

It is leading the UK with the green hybrid electric buses that produce 30% less carbon emissions than standard vehicles. Since 2011, Stagecoach’s fleet has included more than 200 hybrid electric vehicles.

The Solution

As a key part of its five-year sustainability strategy, in March 2011 Stagecoach announced Ecodriver, in which it selected the full suite of GreenRoad products for its bus operations in Scotland, England and Wales.

As well as using GreenRoad’s driver performance system for fleet safety, Stagecoach uses the GreenRoad idling performance solution to reduce fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. Stagecoach drivers are now using GreenRoad across 116 depots to help reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions, improve passenger comfort with a smoother ride and maintain high driving standards.

“We are investing millions of dollars a year in driver training, new vehicles and advanced driver Behavior solutions such as GreenRoad’s to offer our customers greener, smarter travel and ensure our drivers provide passengers with safe and comfortable journeys.”-Robert Andrew, Regional Director-South, Stagecoach Group

The Result

Since implementing GreenRoad driver safety risk has dropped by 60%. “Typically, five percent of all GreenRoad’s drivers annually record a safety score of five or less, where a score under 20 represents safe, fuel-efficient driving. However at Stagecoach the number of drivers achieving this level is up to 20% of all drivers. Additionally, the focus on a rigorous deployment process means that Stagecoach is on target to achieve its goal for Ecodriver of reducing fuel consumption by 4%. In conclusion, Robert Andrew added “By collaborating closely with the executive team, employees and the Unite and RMT trade unions, we have ensured the rollout of a system that is easy to use and will reward continued excellent driving. As well as cutting fuel, GreenRoad is reducing wear-and-tear on our vehicles – such as extending the life of brakes – to reduce the impact of our operations on the environment.”
