Transdev Selects GreenRoad To Cut Accidents and Idling

By the end of 2013, over 1,000 drivers will use GreenRoad to cut fuel and risky incidents

LONDON, UK – September 19th, 2013 – GreenRoad, a leader in driver behaviour, today announced that Transdev, one of the largest public transport operators in Europe, has chosen GreenRoad to cut the risk of accidents and to cut fuel consumption across its fleet of more than 400 buses across Yorkshire and Lancashire. GreenRoad will be deployed across its depots by the end of 2013.

Those depots that have already gone live with GreenRoad now have an average score that is ‘green’ or low risk. Transdev’s latest focus is using GreenRoad’s idling feature to reduce the emissions and wasted fuel from unnecessary idling. At its Harrogate depot it recently reduced idling by 50% in just one week.

Transdev first trialled GreenRoad in 2009 at its Malton, Yorkshire, depot with 18 vehicles and 68 drivers.  Mike Mullins, technical director at Transdev, said “We compared GreenRoad against other telematics solutions. When GreenRoad came out on top we then conducted a pilot for 12 months. After the pilot we started rolling out GreenRoad in August 2012 to York, Harrogate then Keighley depots.

“We originally chose GreenRoad because we could see how instant feedback would help drivers understand how they could drive more carefully,” added Mullins. “After further research piloting GreenRoad we saw how we could also benefit from reduced operating expenses through better fuel economy. Another important element is the ability to track our vehicles and analyze driver behavior. This gives us the facts to address any passenger queries and fraudulent insurance claims.”

One of Transdev’s drivers is Graeme McGinley based out of the Malton depot. He commented “I really enjoy the challenge that the GreenRoad system provides. By using the skills shown to me and developed over many years in the industry, I have managed to maintain an excellent safety score and reduce idling time. I have studied the sequences of traffic lights and monitored traffic flows along our routes. Also I have developed a good knowledge of the vehicles’ handling characteristics thus giving me a great deal of information to consider when undertaking manoevers and driving the vehicle.”

McGinley added, “The smooth, safe driving that GreenRoad encourages benefits passengers and minimizes risk and therefore potentially costly claims. It also benefits the business by reducing fuel costs, something that should concern the whole industry. I am aware of the environmental impact of emissions and noise pollution and by reaching and maintaining a low score, I am playing my part in minimizing that impact.”
