East Yorkshire Motor Services to Roll Out GreenRoad Across its Entire Bus Fleet to Cut Fuel and Accidents

London, UK. — September 29, 2010 — GreenRoad, a leader in driver safety and fuel efficiency, today announced that EYMS, the UK’s largest independent bus operator and Large Bus Operator of the Year 2009, has chosen to deploy GreenRoad across its fleet of 280 buses and will be used by over 600 drivers.

EYMS started using GreenRoad’s service and SAFED (Safe And Fuel-Efficient Driving) training at its Elloughton depot in September 2009. As a result, it has seen an 11% fuel saving year-on-year and a 50% reduction in own-fault accidents during the first half of 2010.

GreenRoad 360 provides drivers and fleet managers with real-time feedback and coaching on driving abilities and patterns. It positively impacts both conscious and unconscious driving behaviour, the key to creating more fuel-efficient and safer drivers. GreenRoad’s driving behaviour measurement system uses the industry’s most sophisticated algorithms to analyse driving and provide drivers with instant feedback on their driving skills with traffic light LEDs indicating the severity of each manoeuvre.

EYMS has a strong corporate commitment to road safety and fuel economy, reflected in its management buy-in to the programme and resulting in a positive response from the bus driver unions involved. Rather than investing in hybrid technology to cut emissions, EYMS believes GreenRoad’s service and SAFED training to improve the efficiency of its existing vehicles offers a more cost-effective approach.

“We started evaluating GreenRoad’s service as a way to reduce our fuel consumption and to try and achieve fuel saving targets set by the government in relation to BSOG (Bus Service Operators Grant),” said Dave Heptinstall, chief engineer at EYMS. “We quickly appreciated that GreenRoad’s service offered further benefits for us and our customers including reduced collisions and improved passenger comfort. In the future, we expect to negotiate with our insurance broker about our insurance premium using GreenRoad’s data to demonstrate the improvement in driving and reduced road incidents.”

GreenRoad’s service is now being rolled-out at the Hull depot, its largest with 102 buses. This will be followed by Scarborough, which has 60 vehicles. The deployment will be completed across all nine depots by the end of 2010. In parallel, Driver Development (UK) Ltd, a GreenRoad partner company, is delivering a ‘train the trainers’ SAFED training to EYMS. Those instructors are now training the entire team of EYMS drivers.

EYMS runs its own call centre, Buscall, to manage customer relations. The Buscall team and the recently appointed EYMS Customer Relations Officer will use GreenRoad’s service to answer customer queries and enhance customer service.
