GreenRoad Survey Shows Fleet Executives Concerned with Fuel Costs, Safety Issues

40% Identify Saving Money by Reducing Fleet Fuel Consumption as Biggest Challenge; 21% Cite Reducing Crash Rates

REDWOOD CITY, CA – November  29,  2011 — GreenRoad, a leader in driver performance and safety management, today announced the results of a recently conducted Fleet Leaders Survey where respondents identified managing fuel costs and reducing crash rates as their two biggest challenges. In the survey, when asked to rank their biggest and most important challenges, 40% identified saving money by reducing fleet fuel consumption and 21% cited reducing crash costs; only 8% identified cutting emissions to meet eco-related objectives.

When asked if they agreed with this statement, ‘beyond everything else, fuel cost is the top issue facing my operation,’ over half, 51%, either agreed or somewhat agreed. The survey also revealed that only 37% of those surveyed had implemented a new fuel-saving initiative in the past 12 months. Of those that did, there were mixed results: 25% didn’t set objectives for the program and nearly one-fifth said the program did not meet their goals or objectives.

“Despite incremental gains in fuel efficiency and safety afforded by programs implemented recently, fleet leaders across North America are still searching for solutions and technology to help them meet their cost savings and safety improvement goals,” said Tanya Roberts, senior vice president of marketing for GreenRoad.

FLEET LEADERS THINK THERE’S ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT

An overwhelming majority of the survey respondents, 94%, said that improving driving performance will have a major beneficial impact on fleet costs. Just 19% agreed that their drivers are true professionals and probably do not have much room for improvement. Forty-two percent (42%) said they will either ‘definitely’ or ‘probably’ invest in new Driving Performance and Safety Management technology in the next 3-4 months.

“As important as fuel is, very few fleet leaders have invested in or enacted a fuel savings program. Of those that did, a quarter didn’t set objectives for the program, and of those that did, nearly one-fifth said it did not meet their goals or objectives. As a result, companies with service offerings that can demonstrate fuel savings value have the opportunity to work with fleet leadership to create value,” continued Roberts.

About the Survey

Survey respondents represent a cross-section of fleet leaders from fleets of all sizes. Eighty-one percent (81%) of respondents have some level of budget responsibility for fleet purchases, either final approval, providing critical input or influencing final purchasing decisions.

GreenRoad’s Fleet Leaders Survey was conducted from October 31 through November 7, 2011. GreenRoad conducted the survey across a database of fleet leaders with a total of 380 total respondents.
