23 EYMS Drivers Recognised as “Best on the Road”
23 bus and coach drivers employed by Hull-based East Yorkshire Motor Services have recently achieved 2012 membership of the national “GreenRoad Fleet Elite” program which attempts to recognize the best fleet drivers on the road.
Fleet Elite status is awarded to drivers who maintain a GreenRoad safety score of five or less for the full calendar year. In 2012 less than 5% of drivers covered by the GreenRoad system globally achieved this top Fleet Elite status.
EYMS Chairman, Peter Shipp, said “We have believed for a long time that our bus and coach drivers are generally among the best in the business and we regularly receive letters, emails and phone calls from passengers commending their driving skills and service to our customers.”
“However, it is now more important than ever that they drive safely and fuel efficiently in these days of high insurance and fuel costs. The efforts by all our drivers have produced a fuel consumption improvement of around 5% across the fleet and no increase in insurance costs for three years running. So, we are especially proud of these 23 members of staff who by constantly applying the GreenRoad safe and fuel efficient driving principles have helped to make the roads a safer, greener place”.
All 300 EYMS buses and coaches are fitted with the unique GreenRoad technology-based driver performance management system which provides drivers with continuous real-time, in-vehicle feedback. At the start of every trip, a drivers log on and starts out “green”. If a poor manoeuvre occurs, such as hard braking or rapid acceleration, the GreenRoad dashboard display flashes a yellow or red light, depending on the severity of the event. These events are tabulated to create a GreenRoad Safety Score which is recorded in the company and can also be accessed by individual drivers on-line.
Peter Shipp added that many of the 470 EYMS drivers are known to regularly check their own progress via the GreenRoad central website.
Safety events are broken into five major categories: braking, acceleration, cornering, lane handling and speeding. Driver behaviour is measured using a sophisticated combination of a sensitive accelerometer, GPS data and advanced algorithms.
GreenRoad considers a Safety Score of 20 or below to be particularly safe or “Green” driving. As well as the 23 individual Fleet Elite drivers, every one of the ten EYMS depots recorded an average score of 20 or less in January with the whole company average achieving a score of under 20 in both January and February for the first time since the system was introduced about two years ago.
The top 23 drivers are also from every one of those ten depots, including 6 at Hull, 5 at Withernsea, 2 each at Scarborough Hornsea, Driffield, and East Yorkshire Coaches, and one each at Elloughton Beverley, Pocklington, and Bridlington.
